The storage is a 512 GB SSD which is large enough to store your files and also contributes to the performance of the workstation by loading applications fast and spends less time booting up.

The display is also one of the best out there. A 17.3 inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) which is an NTSC 94% IPS display. This makes it colour accurate, have great viewing angles and colour reproduction.

The port selection is decent with three USB 3.1 ports and a type-C. Battery life averages 5 hours under normal usage.

The downsides of the laptop are it is pricey, has no Thunderbolt 3 which is a must for its price and it’s quite a heavy weighing almost 6 pounds.

If it wasn’t for these three, the MSI WE75 would have been the best bang for buck workstation.

The Lenovo ThinkPad P52s is a great laptop for not only Autodesk Revit but CAD work in general.

An 8th Gen Intel i7 quad-core, 32GB RAM and an NVIDIA Quadro P500. The Quadro P500 is what makes the Lenovo Thinkpad P52s a great workstation.

Even though it’s not the most powerful. You can get more use out of it compared to the lower end NVIDIA GTX series.

Because NVIDIA Quadro and AMD FirePro cards are the recommended graphics cards for CAD works. Not the consumer graphics cards.

In addition to its certified graphics card, it has a massive amount of RAM. Enough for multitasking and RAM dependent programs.

The display on this thing is decent. A 15.6 inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) that has decent brightness, colour accuracy and reproduction. Viewing angles are decent enough. You won’t have any problems with it. It’s average at best.

When it comes to its battery life. It is above average. You are able to get 8-9 hours under normal use. More often than not, laptops with powerful hardware have short battery lives. But, Lenovo Thinkpads do well in this department.

The Lenovo ThinkPad would have been perfect if not for its webcam. A low-resolution webcam with a lot of graininess.

Avoid this laptop if you use the webcam a lot. You will be sorely disappointed by its poor quality.

But still, the Lenovo ThinkPad P52s is an affordable workstation with quite the powerful hardware. One of the best workstation for Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD if you are on a budget.

The Microsoft Surface Book 2 is the ultimate laptop for productivity. This laptop or convertible allows you to switch between a laptop and a tablet.

This feature is particularly useful in Revit. Being able to work in tablet mode anytime you like. Whiles using the Stylus pen for editing and rendering.

This convertible is powered by an 8th Gen Intel Core i7 processor. The 8th Gen Intel Core i7 is on par with the previous Intel Core i7 processor which is found in high-end gaming laptops.

What this means for you is that you have a powerful device that will tear through a lot of applications. The RAM is on the low side though.

Fortunately, there is an option that allows you to upgrade to 16GB. This will finalize its transformation into a beast. The graphics card is an NVIDIA GTX 1050 which is a capable graphics card. It is also capable when it comes to gaming.

Microsoft products have great displays. And the Microsoft Surface Book 2 is no exception. A 13.5-inch high-resolution display.

Microsoft calls this PixelSense (3240 x 2160). That’s close to 4K resolution. Brightness, colour accuracy and reproduction are above average.

Battery life is stellar too. Being able to last an average of 12 hours from a full charge.

Where this convertible falls short is the absence of a Thunderbolt 3 port. A pricey device such as this should include Thunderbolt 3.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t. And Microsoft also didn’t give any reason why they made that decision.

Still, the Microsoft Surface Book 2 still stands as one of the best laptops for productivity. Being able to fully detach and re-attach the display from the keyboard makes it so. Throw in Stylus pen and designs become easier to do.

Build quality on this machine is top-notch. This is a full metal body. It’s rigid and has no flex to it.

Unfortunately, the great build quality comes at a cost. The edges are sharp and using it in tablet mode is uncomfortable.

Moreover, even though it’s not heavy, it feels heavy. And it’s an absolute fingerprint magnet. Because it’s an all metal design. A plastic laptop is going to feel lighter.

For performance, it is powered by an 8th Gen Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB RAM and an NVIDIA MX150. A powerful processor and lots of RAM is always good.

The RAM cannot be upgraded because it is soldered to the motherboard. The NVIDIA MX150 is an entry-level graphics card. It is decent when it comes to rendering. But do not expect fast rendering times.

The display on the HP Spectre x360 is impressive. A 15.6 inch 4K (3840 x 2160) touchscreen display. 4K displays always have above colour accuracy and reproduction.

Their brightness level is also high and viewing angles are great. In short, this 4K display won’t disappoint you.

Battery life is great too. You can use this for several hours – you are looking at 9 to 10 hours – under consistent use.

Overall, the HP Spectre x360 is a beautiful machine. Solid build quality, good battery life and decent performance. This convertible has it.

It also allows you to make use of NVIDIA Quadro cards by using an external GPU. This allows you to speed up rendering times.

There is also have a lower spec model which has an 8th Gen Intel i5 and 8 GB RAM. Both processors are the ultra-low power. It is not as fast as the hexa-core or H processor but it will get the job done so far as you don’t task it too much.

The display is a 12.3 PixelSense (2736 x 1824) which is very bright and colour accurate. It also has great viewing angles. The port side is seriously lacking.

Only one USB 3.0 there is no Thunderbolt 3 or USB Type-C port. The battery life though is very good. You will get almost 10 hours of battery life under normal usage.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 6 is a great 2-in-1 laptop if you favour portability especially if you are on-site most of the time and need to make some changes on Revit. *Keyboard and Stylus pen.

The Dell G3 is a budget gaming laptop with quite the powerful hardware. Hardware that meets the requirements for running Autodesk Revit. And it can handle some AutoCAD works.

This laptop is power by an 8th Gen Intel Core i5 processor. This processor is a high-performance chip that outperforms the 8th Gen Intel Core i7 U processors.

It makes sense since the Dell G3 is a gaming laptop. And games need powerful processors and GPUs to run smoothly. So when it comes to processing power this laptop doesn’t lack any.

The RAM is only 8GB. This might not be sufficient for Revit especially when doing a large project. Fortunately, you can easily upgrade it to 16GB for better performance.

The same applies to the 1TB HDD. It is slow and swapping it out for an SSD will greatly improve system performance. Those are suggestions though even without doing those the performance is still great.

The NVIDIA GTX 1050 is also a capable graphics card and provides decent rendering capabilities.

Display on the Dell G3 is a little bit below average. Brightness is low. Viewing angles are decent. Colour accuracy and reproduction are also average.

It’s a 15.6 inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) display. The display could have been better. But it seems Dell wanted to keep costs down.

For a gaming laptop, battery life is decent. It’s able to last 6-7 hours under consistent use. Most gaming laptops last 2-3 hours on average.

A few things to consider in looking for the best laptop for Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD

CPU

Revit and AutoCAD require a lot of processing power. CPUs with high clock speeds are the most recommended. The higher the clock speed the more work it will be able to do in a minute. Another thing you should also take into consideration is the number of cores.

Multiple cores with high clock speeds are much better than single cores with lower clock speed. But, a single core which has a very high clock speed is better than multiple cores with lower clock speeds.

If you also plan on rendering the more cores the better. For the reasons mentioned above, the best processors are Ryzen 5, Ryzen 7, Intel Core i5 and i7.

RAM

Revit requires a large amount of RAM for it to run smoothly. According to AutoDesk, opening a 100 MB Revit central file will consume 2 GB RAM. This quickly consumes a lot of RAM if you are opening large files 200 MB and above.

Graphics Card

Graphics cards are not as important as CPU and RAM. Unless you plan on 3D rendering and running simulations an integrated graphics card will suffice. Quadro cards are the best in the industry when it comes to rendering and running simulations but are also very expensive.

Consumer graphics cards are much cheaper but not as powerful as Quadro cards. Quadro cards are mostly reserved for professional and heavy-duty tasks.

Display And Storage

A display resolution of Full HD (1920 x 1080) is the recommended minimum. For storage, solid state drive is a must because of its fast read and write speeds. SSDs access data very fast, boots up our laptop in a few seconds and launches applications quickly. For HDDs, a minimum of 7200 RPM is recommended.
