Microsoft Surface Book 2

Microsoft Surface Book 2 (Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 256GB) - 15in (Renewed)

The Microsoft Surface Book 2 is one of the best and most recommended laptops you can get for animation or graphics design. Microsoft really did a number on this one. This 2-in-1 laptop is a true convertible has a superb display and great hardware.

A true convertible in the sense that you can detach the display from the keyboard. Allowing you to use it as a normal tablet. And things get better if you have a stylus.

Unlike the other convertible laptops where you have to turn the display 360 degrees before using it in tablet mode.

The display is a PixelSense display which boasts a 3000 x 2000 resolution. That’s close to 4K resolution. The colour accuracy, reproduction and saturation are high. Viewing angles are great and the display is bright enough.

When it comes to computing power. You get a 7th Gen Intel quad-core i5 and 8GB RAM. The storage space is a 256GB SSD. If you plan on doing 2D animation and graphic design. It’s best advised to go with the i5 and 8GB RAM.

But 3D animation requires more powerful hardware. Unfortunately, the Microsoft Surface Book 2’s RAM and SSD can’t be upgraded.

And so you will be stuck with what you purchased. So you have to get the higher configurations. Another thing too is that the more powerful configurations are pricey.

The higher configurations come with an NVIDIA GTX 1060 card. Which is one of the recommended cards for 3D animation (Autodesk Maya and Adobe Premiere Pro).

So for just basic 2D animation and graphic design, the lowest configuration will serve you well. But, if you want more power. Choose the highest configuration that fits your budget.

Battery life on this is insane. You are looking at 12 hours or more. 12 hours if you use the tablet or display by itself. 12 hours and more if the display is attached to the keyboard.

The Microsoft Surface Book 2 fits the requirements of being an animator’s laptop. Excellent display, battery life and a powerful dedicated graphics card i.e if you purchase the powerful configurations.

Pros

Solid Performance

Excellent Display

Insane Battery Life

A True 2-in-1 Laptop

Cons

No Thunderbolt 3

Higher Configurations Are Pricey

MSI GS65 Stealth

MSI GS65 Stealth-007 15.6' Razor Thin Bezel Gaming Laptop NVIDIA RTX 2060 6G, 144Hz 7ms, Intel i7-8750H (6 cores), 16GB, 256GB NVMe SSD, TB3, Per Key RGB, Win 10 Pro, Matte Black with Gold Diamond cut

The MSI GS65 Stealth has one of the most beautiful displays amongst laptops. This display has high colour accuracy, vibrancy, saturation and reproduction.

Being able to reproduce and show colours as they are is important in animation and graphic design.

The display is a Full HD (1920 x 1080) thin bezel display with a 144Hz refresh rate. If you are an animator or graphics designer who likes to play games.

You will find this a great benefit. Because high refresh rate displays reduce screen tearing and stuttering. Producing a smooth gaming experience.

The MSI GS65 Stealth is a gaming laptop. And like with all gaming laptops. Its computing power is nothing to scoff at. An 8th Gen Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB RAM and an NVIDIA RTX 2060 card.

The RTX 2060 is a powerful card that can handle demanding 3D animations and AAA title games easily.

The SSD is also super-fast. So the laptop will boot up quickly, applications will load fast and file transfers will take seconds.

Unfortunately, the SSD is 256 GB which will not be sufficient. On the bright side, you can easily upgrade this to a larger SSD capacity.

Build quality on this laptop is so and so. There is noticeable flex when holding the display. And the keyboard area. MSI says the build quality is diamond cut. But with such noticeable flex. It’s hard to believe.

Plus, this thing gets loud under heavy loads. It’s to be expected if you want your laptop to be properly cooled and avoid thermal throttling. The fans have to work at maximum speed to better manage the heat produced.

Battery life is below average. But above average for a gaming laptop. This thing is able to last 5-6 hours under consistent use. A respectable figure for a gaming laptop. Most gaming laptops last somewhere between 2-3 hours.

Overall, MSI GS65 is a solid option for animation. It has the performance and an excellent display for demanding 3D animations, 3D modelling and rendering.

Pros

Great Performance

Great Display

Good Battery Life

Thin & Light

Cons

Not The Best Build Quality

Loud Under Heavy Loads

Low Storage Space

MSI GS65 Stealth Review

Razer Blade 15

Razer Blade 15: World's Smallest 15.6' Gaming Laptop - 60Hz Full HD Thin Bezel - 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8750H 6 Core - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Max-Q - 16GB RAM - 256GB SSD + 2TB HDD - Windows 10

The Razer Blade 15 is one of the go-to laptops for creators. The build quality on this laptop is top-notch. A full aluminium chassis. What this means for you is that.

The laptop has virtually no flex to it. And it’s robust. But, with all aluminium builds. It is an absolute fingerprint magnet. So you will be cleaning it often.

Just like with all gaming laptops. The performance is great. An 8th Gen Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM and an NVIDIA GTX 1060 Max-Q.

Capable hardware for gaming, 3D animation and to some extent 3D modelling. The storage, on the other hand, will give you mixed feelings.

A combined 256GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. The OS will be kept on the SSD for fast boot up speeds. But that’s it. Because there won’t be enough space left to keep on the SSD.

So you have to store it on the HDD. And HDDs are slow. If you know your way around the internals of a laptop. The best thing is to swap the SSD and HDD for a bigger capacity SSD.

Razer blade laptops are known for their exceptional displays. And the Blade 15 has a high colour accuracy, reproduction, saturation and vibrancy. This gives you an edge in animation and graphic design.

Since colours are correctly represented on the display. It’s a great screen but it is dim. If you like to work outside. Then this dim display won’t be enough to combat the sun’s brightness. For indoors, you will be totally fine.

Battery life is decent. You are looking at 5-6 hours under consistent use. Which is pretty respectable for a gaming laptop. The only gaming laptops so far that beats its battery life are the MSI GS65 and Gigabyte Aero 15x.

The aluminium chassis and stunning display are the main selling points of the Razer Blade 15. Brightness could be better. Overall, this machine certainly gets the job done with its performance and light form factor.

Beautiful Sharp Display

Decent Battery Life

CUK MSI GF75 Thin Gamer Notebook (Intel i7-9750H, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 4GB, 17.3' FHD 120Hz IPS-Level, Windows 10 Home) Gaming Laptop Computer

The MSI P65 is a laptop meant for creators and productivity work. It’s a simple looking laptop that houses powerful hardware.

When I say powerful, you are looking at an 8th Gen hexacore processor, 16GB RAM and a GTX 1060 Max-Q. A powerful processor and a lot of RAM is more than enough for a lot of intensive tasks.

This laptop can handle anything you throw at it. Doesn’t matter if it is a demanding 3D animation. It will get the job done.

The NVIDIA GTX 1060 Max-Q is also one of the recommended cards for Autodesk Maya and Adobe Premiere Pro.

It also has a massive storage space. A 1TB NVME SSD. SSDs always comes with loads of benefits. Super-fast boot-up speeds, fast transfer speeds in copying files and quick loading of applications.

The build quality is also top-notch. An aluminium chassis that has been painted white. Metallic chassis always have the best build quality. Plus, the white finish prevents it from being a fingerprint magnet.

The display has above average colour accuracy, reproduction and contrast levels. High enough to work with colours. It also has a 144Hz refresh rate.

If you are the work and gamer type. You already know that high refresh rate displays make gameplay smooth. Because there is no screen tearing or stuttering.

Battery life is also decent. Even with its powerful hardware. The battery life is able to last 6-7 hours which is respectable.

The MSI P65 is not a perfect laptop and has its flaws. The first flaw is its thermal management. This laptop will run hot under heavy loads. But that’s because of its slim chassis.

Laptop with slim chassis doesn’t have great heat management systems. So they tend to run hot under heavy loads except a few.

Its second flaw is its webcam. A webcam that is grainy. Skip this laptop if you do video or Skype a lot.

Lastly, the back-lighting of the keyboard is not impressive. The keyboard is good but the back-lighting is uneven and not bright.

If you are looking for a powerhouse. Then the MSI P65 Creator is a solid option. To be honest, nothing can wrong with an i7 processor, 32GB and GTX 1060 Max-Q card.

Acer Predator Helios 300

Acer Predator Helios 300 Gaming Laptop PC, 15.6 inches Full HD 144Hz 3ms IPS Display, Intel i7-9750H, GTX 1660 Ti 6GB, 16GB DDR4, 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD, Backlit Keyboard, PH315-52-78VL

The Acer Predator Helios 300 is an affordable gaming laptop with an above average display. And excellent performance. In addition to that, it’s thinner and lighter than its predecessor making it a great option for students.

It is powered by a 9th Gen Intel Core i7 hexacore processor and 16GB RAM. The 9th Gen processor is 5 to 10 per cent faster than the 8th Gen which is not much. But still faster.

The graphics card is a GTX 1660 Ti which is a powerful card and comparable to the RTX 2060. So you can expect high FPS on AAA title games and able to handle demanding 3D animations.

What Acer did right is thermal management. Even though it has a powerful processor and graphics card. This thing stays relatively cool under heavy loads. There are more heat pipes and vents.

The fans can also be sent into overdrive leading to better cooling but at the expense of being loud.

The display is a 15.6 inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) 144Hz with fairly thin bezels. The colour accuracy and reproduction are above average.

Yes, there are better panels out there. But at its price point, it’s great for a student who is learning animation or graphic design.

Battery life is poor. You will get 2-3 hours of power under consistent use. Thanks to its small battery capacity and power-hungry hardware.

If battery life is a big factor for you then skip this laptop. But if you are all about the performance and decent display whilst being affordable. Then the Acer Predator Helios 300 is a solid option.

Easily one of the best laptops for animation or graphic design students. Who also like to play AAA title games on high FPS.

Acer Predator Helios 300 Review

Microsoft Surface pro 6

Microsoft  Surface Pro 6 (Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 128GB)

Another great convertible laptop for animation and graphic design. To be precise 2D animation.

Because it doesn’t have a dedicated graphics card. It is not recommended for 3D animation. The integrated graphics card won’t be able to handle 3D animation quite well. But, for 2D animation, it’s a solid option.

The display has a high resolution. You are looking at a 2736 x 1824 PixelSense display. Moreover, laptops and convertibles made by Microsoft have excellent displays.

What this means for you that you get a display that is sharp and has high colour gamut. Always a useful benefit to have when your line of work deals with colours.

What this means for you that you get a display that is sharp and has high colour gamut. Always a useful benefit to have when your line of work deals with colours.

You can also use the Surface Pro 6 as a tablet. Add in a stylus and you have got the perfect device for drawing and graphic design. Unfortunately, the stylus is sold separately.

Performance-wise. The basic configuration has an 8th Gen Intel quad-core i5, 8GB RAM and 128GB. It’s also the most affordable if you are on a tight budget.

The processor is quite powerful and it’s only 10 per cent slower than the previous generation i7 processor found in gaming laptops. So in terms of performance, you won’t be disappointed.

The RAM and SSD of the Microsoft Surface Pro 6 can’t be upgraded. So if you go with the most basic option. You should know that you will be stuck with the hardware.

In addition to that, the better the configuration the pricier it becomes. The best configuration is the i7, 16GB and 512GB SSD. This ensures your device is future-proof and has enough space for your projects.

Battery life is also impressive. It’s able to last 10 hours under consistent use.
The Microsoft Surface Pro 6 is a great 2-in-1 laptop for 2D animation and graphic design.

Because you are able to easily switch between a tablet and a laptop. Throw in a stylus and you have pretty much got yourself a drawing board. The only thing that might put you off is its single USB port.

Pros

Solid Performance

Great Battery Life

Great Display

Cons

Microsoft Surface Pro 6 Review

Things To Look Out For When Getting A Laptop For Animation

Here are a few things to looking out for when getting the right hardware for animation or graphic design.

CPU

Having a powerful CPU is important. Intel i5 processors and higher are strongly recommended. For AMD, go with Ryzen 5 and 7s.

These are also comparable in performance to Intel i5 and i7 processors respectively.

To know the meanings in the Intel letters you can read this guide. You can also read this guide to better understand AMD Ryzen processors.

Graphics Card

Autodesk Maya, Blender, Adobe Premiere Pro etc. have their requirements on which graphics cards to use.

To be on the safer side, NVIDIA GTX 1060 or higher is recommended. That is for 3D animation.

For 2D animation and graphic design, you can get away with integrated graphics card or cards lower than GTX 1060.

Display

Another important thing to look out for. Since you will be working with colours all the time.

You need a display that is able to show and reproduce colours well. That means you should get a display with high colour gamut.

One trick to quickly identify displays with high colour accuracy and reproduction is the resolution.

Laptops that have high-resolution displays always have high colour accuracy and reproduction. But keep in mind that there are also laptops with full HD (1920 x 1080) displays that also have high colour gamut.

RAM

Minimum 8GB RAM. Recommended RAM is 16GB and for best results 32GB RAM. You need enough RAM for the program to run and to multitask. Insufficient RAM will just cause problems for you.

Final Thoughts

That’s it for the best laptops for animators and animation students. Feel free to drop a comment.
