Design and Build Quality

Acer did a redesign of the Acer Predator Helios 300. Whiles the previous model was red and black. The Acer Predator Helios 300 2019 is now black and blue.

The design is almost clean except for the lid. Where the large Predator logo can be seen with two lines at the sides. Still, a better design than most gaming laptops with the fancy red lines.

Acer Predator Helios 300

The build quality is solid and sturdy with little to no flex. The top and keyboard desk is metal whiles the under is hard plastic. Moreover, it is lighter and thinner than before. The thickness is about an inch and weighs 2.3kg/ 5.3lbs.

The previous model used to weigh 2.56kg/ 5.64lbs whilst being over an inch thick. A complete redesign. The gaming laptop also has exhaust vents coming out at the bottom, back and sides for better air ventilation.

Overall, the design is aesthetically pleasing and not much of a dead giveaway of it being a gaming laptop.

The HP Omen maintains the same design as the previous models with a few changes. The overall build quality is the same. A sturdy and compact gaming laptop with little to no flex. It is a mix of metal and plastic.

The top lid and keyboard deck are brushed aluminium whilst the rest of the device is hard textured plastic. The gaming laptop weighs almost the same as the Acer Predator Helios 300. You are looking at a 2.4kg/ 5.26lbs laptop that is an inch thick.

The colour is all-black. Previous models had a few red lines running here and there. Especially on the lid. The logo was red with red accents on the lid. Now, the logo is just white with no accents running along the body of the gaming laptop.

A clean and minimalistic design. You will also notice exhaust vents at the sides, bottom, and back.

The placement of the hinges has been changed too. Previously it used to something like two pillars holding the display. This somewhat made you worry if the hinge was strong enough. Fortunately, HP changed the hinge completely. They don’t stand alone and are much stronger than before.

Overall, the HP Omen has one of the cleanest designs when it comes to gaming laptops. A simple all-black design. And it is solid and compact too. Strong enough to last a long time.

Both gaming laptops have great build quality. But, if you prefer a cleaner design then the HP Omen is a better choice.

Display

There is not much difference between the two gaming laptops. Both have:

  • 144Hz Display
  • Above Average Colour Accuracy
  • Almost The Same Level Of Brightness
  • And Are Matte Displays

Both are good displays and the main selling point is the 144Hz display. High refresh rate displays are a must because they reduce screen tearing, stuttering and ghosting. This ensures smooth and pleasant gameplay.

The displays being matte is also a plus because they reduce glare and screen reflections. Glare is a serious problem and without the proper protection, your eyes will suffer. An absolute must if you stare or play games all day.

Another thing is that both are IPS displays. That means they have great viewing angles and better colour gamut and reproduction.

So for displays, they are pretty even here.

One more thing.

Even though both are Full HD (1920 x 1080). The HP Omen has a 4K display option. But, for gaming purposes getting the Full HD will give you the best value.

Thermals

Ah, thermals every gaming laptop weakness. Fortunately, both the Acer Predator Helios 300 and HP Omen do not have thermal problems. Their thermals have been redesigned making them better than their predecessors.

For example, the Acer Predator Helios 300 now has fans flanking the sides. The previous model has all the fans at one side and a few heat pipes. Which led to some high temperatures and thermal throttling. This model has plenty of heat pipes that do a great job of heat transfer.

Plus, the fans have different blade design and size. Moreover, the laptop is undervolted right out of the box. This is great! Because less power means less heat produced. Whilst not affecting performance.

In short, the Acer Predator Helios 300 has great cooling and thermals and there will be no thermal throttling under heavy loads.

The HP Omen also has a similar cooling system to that of the Acer Predator Helios 300. There are two fans on the sides with several heat pipes. This ensures that the cooling is on point. The vents at the back and side also do a great job of expelling heat.

The HP Omen though doesn’t come undervolted out of the box. And it’s impressive because it doesn’t get so hot and thermal throttle.

Both gaming laptops also allow you to control fan speed for better cooling. But, at the cost of being loud. Overall, both their cooling system is great and won’t pose a problem.

Upgradeability

Unlike the MSI GS65. The HP Omen and Acer Predator Helios 300 are easy to upgrade. Remove a few screws at the back of the laptop. And you get access to the internals.

Both have dual-channel memory you can take advantage of. There is also an extra slot for NVMe storage and an HDD bay. There is also the Wi-Fi card which you can easily swap.

Upgrading the RAM, SSD, HDD and Wi-Fi card is easy to do. Because removing the back panel easily gives you access to all of them. Which you can then proceed with your upgrades. So as for upgradeability, there is no problem there.

Performance

The most important thing for a gaming laptop – performance. Since it is the main reason why you want to get one. Fortunately, enough both are gaming BEASTS. They both have a 9th Gen Intel Core i7 six-core processor.

The 9th Gen i7 beats the previous generation – 8th Gen – by eight per cent. It doesn’t seem much but it is still enough to make an impact on performance.

It also has a higher base and boost clock speeds than the 8th Gen. So for processing performance, it is a powerful processor which is future-proof.

Acer Predator Helios 300 Review

When it comes to the GPU. Both have the option of you choosing between the RTX 2060 and GTX 1660 Ti. Both are powerful cards that can push high framerates in AAA title games.

They are similar in performance. But the RTX 2060 slightly more powerful than the GTX 1660 Ti.

You are looking at about 3-5 per cent. The advantage the RTX 2060 has over the GTX 1660 Ti is Ray Tracing and the greater amount of CUDA cores it has. More CUDA cores mean the more future-proof it is in gaming.

HP Omen Review

Both are great cards and will give you the best performance in their price range.

The Acer Predator Helios 300 has a software control centre called PredatorSense. This software allows you to overclock your GPU and CPU for better gaming performance. It also has a ton of functionality added to it. A useful software.

Battery Life

The HP Omen wins this one hands down. And it’s all because of its large battery. A 70WHr battery compared to the 58WHr battery of the Acer Predator Helios 300.

You are looking at 5-6 hours of battery life under consistent use on the HP Omen. Whilst the Acer Predator Helios 300 is 3-4 hours under consistent use.

HP Omen Vs Acer Predator Helios 300 – Which One Should You Get?

Both the HP Omen and Acer Predator Helios 300 have a great price-to-performance ratio. And this makes it harder to choose between the two. Let’s take at what they have going for each of them below.

As you can see, the HP Omen is a better choice. But, the Acer Predator Helios 300 is the more affordable of the two. The difference is somewhere between 100-500 USD depending on the configuration.

The HP Omen also comes with a Thunderbolt 3 port which is a great thing to have. Because having a Thunderbolt 3 port allows you to connect to an external GPU. Super helpful if your GPU isn’t able to keep up with the latest games.

To sum it all up, the HP Omen is the better choice because of its battery life. And the Acer Predator Helios 300 is a great option if you are on a budget.
