Design and Build Quality

The Gigabyte Aero 15 has a minimalistic design that doesn’t scream gaming laptop. To be honest, it is a boring design with no fancy and flashy lines running around it. The only obvious design that gives it away as a gaming laptop is the logo.

It lights up when you turn the device on. In terms of build quality, it has an aluminium body with the lid being carbon fibre. Gaming laptops with aluminium bodies always have the best build quality. There is little to no flex or creaks. A compact laptop that will last a long time.

Gigabyte Aero 15 Review

When it comes to weight. It’s roughly about 2Kg or 4.4 pounds. One of the lightest gaming laptops on the market. Unfortunately, it is a fingerprint magnet. So you need to keep a cleaning cloth with you at all times.

The MSI GS66 Stealth, on the other hand, has a one of the best build qualities out there. There is no flex and creaks thanks to the full aluminium body.

The design is simplistic and beautiful. An all-black design with a muted logo. Unlike the previous models that had gold accents running along the edges. To be honest, it does look better than Gigabyte Aero 15 because is doesn’t stand out much.

MSI GS66

The design has one fatal flaw. It is a fingerprint magnet. This thing will quickly get messy. Having a cleaning cloth is a must. For the weight, it is 100g less than the Gigabyte Aero i.e. approximately 1.9kg or 4.2 pounds.

The MSI GS66 has the better design. But build quality is pretty much the same.

Display

For a gaming laptop, the display is important. A good display should have a high refresh rate. And both of these laptops do have them. High refresh rate displays always make gameplay smoother. Because there are no screen tearing, stuttering and ghosting.

MSI GS66 Review

The MSI GS66 and Gigabyte Aero 15 either come with a 144Hz to 300Hz display with thin bezels. The best option is going for the 144Hz display. Because it hits the sweet spot. And to be honest, the 240Hz or 300Hz display is overkill unless you consistently play games on 240 FPS or above.

When it comes to colour accuracy, the MSI GS66 beats the Gigabyte Aero 15 i.e Full HD versions. It has one of the highest colour accuracies amongst gaming laptops. This makes it great for graphic related work and content creation. Because the display can match that of real-world colours.

This is not to say the Gigabyte Aero 15’s display is not colour accurate. The Aero 15 is above average and can still be used for graphic related work. But, the MSI GS66 beats it.

And it doesn’t also beat it there. It also beats it in brightness too. The MSI GS66 has a brighter display than the Gigabyte Aero 15. And so if display brightness and colour accuracy is a thing for you. Then you know which one to choose.

When it comes to the resolution. There MSI GS66 is only available in FHD (1920 x 1080) resolution. Whilst the Gigabyte Aero 15 has FHD, 4K and 4K OLED options. The 4K and 4K OLED displays have crazy high colour accuracy and brightness.

But, at the cost of being more expensive and the battery life taking a hit. On the plus side, content creators will benefit greatly from owning the 4K option.

But for gaming purposes, the Full HD is a better choice.

One more thing, the webcam position of the Gigabyte Aero 15 is in a weird position. It’s located at the bottom of the display. This causes it to look into your nose. Not recommended if you video call or Skype a lot.

Thermals

Before we talk about thermal solutions. You should know one thing about thin and light gaming laptops.

They run hot.

Thin and light gaming laptops have restricted airflow because of the size and form factor. This results in poor removal of heat leading to high temperatures and thermal throttling. So no matter which thin and light gaming laptop you get. It will run hot.

But, between the MSI GS66 and Gigabyte Aero 15 which runs cooler?

The MSI GS66 does.

MSI did a great job when it came to the cooling solution of the MSI GS66 Stealth. It has six heat pipes and three fans in total. Two fans dedicated to the GPU and one fan to the CPU.

The fans are small and they do not make a lot of noise when they are hard at work. Right out of the box, if you subject this to intense gaming. Temperatures sit around 80-90C which is decent for a thin and light gaming laptop.

For the Gigabyte Aero 15. It has four heat pipes and two fans in total. An obvious reason why it is the hotter of the two. Right out of the box, intense gaming will push temperatures to 90C +. Which has no option but to throttle to reduce temperatures.

One way of reducing high temperatures is by applying thermal paste and undervolting. This brings temperatures down to appreciable levels even under heavy workloads. Overall, this leads to better gaming experience and long-lasting hardware.

If the cooling solution is not great. The performance takes a hit because the CPU has to throttle causing clock speeds to reduce. And this results in not-so-great performance.

Upgradeability

The MSI GS65 was a pain to upgrade compared to other gaming laptops. The motherboard was been flipped upside down. So you have to remove A LOT of screws and cables just to access the RAM, storage, WIFI and other internals. You should also be delicate with it.

The good news is that MSI changed this with the MSI GS66. It’s not upside down anymore making it easy to get into and upgrade. For them to make such a change in their shows that MSI listens to their customers.

Upgrading the Gigabyte Aero 15 is a breeze. Just remove a few screws, lift the bottom panel and VOILA! You have access to not only the RAM but also the storage and WIFI.

Both can be upgraded to a maximum of 64GB RAM and have 2 DIMM slots. This allows you to take advantage of dual-channel memory. Because memory running in dual channel always translates to better performance.

The storage area has NVMe slots with no space for an HDD upgrade. This is to be expected for a thin and light gaming laptop.

Performance

Ah, performance. The main reason for getting a gaming laptop. Both are beasts. An Intel Hexa-core processor i7 – i9, lots of RAM and an NVIDIA RTX graphics card.

There is no way you won’t be able to play the latest AAA title games on the highest settings. The hardware will crush just about any demanding application.

Battery Life

The MSI GS66 wins this round. It has one of the best battery life out of all the gaming laptops thanks to its 99.9WHr battery. This gives you about 6-8 hours of battery life under consistent use.

Gigabyte Aero 15

The Gigabyte Aero 15 has a 94WHr battery and it’s able to last 5-7 hours under normal usage. It is respectable. Most gaming laptops last somewhere between 3-4 hours.

Verdict – Pros and Cons

Both gaming laptops have a lot going on. And this makes it difficult to choose between them. Here are the pros and cons of each of them.
