Design and Build Quality

The Gigabyte Aero 15x has a minimalistic design that doesn’t scream gaming laptop. To be honest, it is a boring design with no fancy and flashy lines running around it. The only obvious design that gives it away as a gaming laptop is the logo.

It lights up when you turn the device on. In terms of build quality, it has an aluminium body with the lid being carbon fibre. Gaming laptops with aluminium bodies always have the best build quality. There is little to no flex or creaks. A compact laptop that will last a long time.

Gigabyte Aero 15x Review

When it comes to weight. It’s roughly about 2Kg or 4.4 pounds. One of the lightest gaming laptops on the market. Unfortunately, it is a fingerprint magnet. So you need to keep a cleaning cloth with you at all times.

The MSI GS65 Stealth, on the other hand, has a so-and-so build quality. So-and-so because even though it made out of aluminium alloy. There is a little bit of flex and creaks here and there. Especially around the lid area.

So you have to be extra careful when handling it. Just like with all laptops. It’s due to the panelling. Pieces of aluminium alloy put together. You can also lay the display flat thanks to its flexible hinge.

The design is simple and beautiful. An all-black design with gold accents running along the edges. Doesn’t it just look better than the Gigabyte Aero 15x? MSI also made their logo a gold dragon.

Instead of the red and white logo, they have been using on other laptops. Plus, this logo doesn’t light up. The design makes it look like a high-end laptop which it is.

The design has one fatal flaw. It is a fingerprint magnet. This thing will quickly get messy. Having a cleaning cloth is a must. For the weight, it is 100g less than the Gigabyte Aero i.e. approximately 1.9kg or 4.2 pounds.

The MSI GS65 has the better design and the Gigabyte Aero 15x wins when it comes to build quality.

Display

For a gaming laptop, the display is important. A good display should have a high refresh rate. And both of these laptops do have them. High refresh rate displays always make gameplay smoother. Because there are no screen tearing, stuttering and ghosting.

MSI GS65 Review

The MSI GS65 and Gigabyte Aero 15x either come with a 144Hz or 240Hz display with thin bezels. The best option is going for the 144Hz display. Because it hits the sweet spot. And to be honest, the 240Hz display is overkill unless you consistently play games on 240 FPS or above.

When it comes to colour accuracy, the MSI GS65 beats the Gigabyte Aero 15x. It has one of the highest colour accuracies amongst gaming laptops. This makes it great for graphic related work and content creation. Because the display can match that of real-world colours.

This is not to say the Gigabyte Aero 15x’s display is not colour accurate. The Aero 15x is above average and can still be used for graphic related work. But, the MSI GS65 beats it.

And it doesn’t also beat it there. It also beats it in brightness too. The MSI GS65 has a brighter display than the Gigabyte Aero 15x. And so if display brightness and colour accuracy is a thing for you. Then you know which one to choose.

When it comes to the resolution. There MSI GS65 is only available in FHD (1920 x 1080) resolution. Whilst the Gigabyte Aero 15x has FHD, 4K and 4K OLED options. The 4K and 4K OLED displays have crazy colour accuracy and brightness.

But, at the cost of being more expensive and the battery life taking a hit. On the plus side, content creators will benefit greatly from owning the 4K option.

But for gaming purposes, the Full HD is a better choice.

One more thing, the webcam position of the Gigabyte Aero 15x is in a weird position. It’s located at the bottom of the display. This causes it to look into your nose. Not recommended if you video call or Skype a lot.

Thermals

Before we talk about thermal solutions. You should know one thing about thin and light gaming laptops.

They run hot.

Thin and light gaming laptops have restricted airflow because of the size and form factor. This results in poor removal of heat leading to high temperatures and thermal throttling. So no matter which thin and light gaming laptop you get. It will run hot.

But, between the MSI GS65 and Gigabyte Aero 15x which runs cooler?

The MSI GS65 does.

MSI did a great job when it came to the cooling solution of the MSI GS65 Stealth. It has five heat pipes and three fans in total. Two fans dedicated to the GPU and one fan to the CPU.

MSI GS65 Teardown

The fans are small and they do not make a lot of noise when they are hard at work. Right out of the box, if you subject this to intense gaming. Temperatures sit around 80-90C which is decent for a thin and light gaming laptop.

For the Gigabyte Aero 15x. It has two heat pipes and two fans in total. An obvious reason why it is the hotter of the two. Right out of the box, intense gaming will push temperatures to 90C +. Which has no option but to throttle to reduce temperatures.

One way of reducing high temperatures is by applying thermal paste and undervolting. This brings temperatures down to appreciable levels even under heavy workloads. Overall, this leads to better gaming experience and long-lasting hardware.

If the cooling solution is not great. The performance takes a hit because the CPU has to throttle causing clock speeds to reduce. And this results in not-so-great performance.

Upgradeability

The MSI GS65 is a pain to upgrade compared to the Gigabyte Aero 15x. The motherboard has been flipped upside down. So you have to remove A LOT of screws and cables just to access the RAM, storage, WIFI and other internals. You should also be delicate with it.

Because one mistake can cause problems for you. Like voiding the warranty. So unless you don’t know what you are doing or don’t want to void the warranty. Look for vendors or specialists who have done or will do the upgrades for you.

Upgrading the Gigabyte Aero 15x is a breeze. Just remove a few screws, lift the bottom panel and VOILA! You have access to not only the RAM but also the storage and WIFI.

Both can be upgraded to a maximum of 64GB RAM and have 2 DIMM slots. This allows you to take advantage of dual-channel memory. Because memory running in dual channel always translates to better performance.

The storage area has NVMe slots with no space for an HDD upgrade. This is to be expected for a thin and light gaming laptop.

Overall, the Gigabyte Aero 15x is the easier of the two when it comes to upgradeability.

Performance

Ah, performance. The main reason for getting a gaming laptop. Both are beasts. A 9th Gen Intel Hexa-core processor, lots of RAM and an NVIDIA RTX graphics card.

There is no way you won’t be able to play the latest AAA title games on the highest settings. The hardware will crush just about any demanding application.

Battery Life

The Gigabyte Aero 15x wins this round. It has the best battery life out of all the gaming laptops thanks to its 94WHr battery. This gives you about 7-8 hours of battery life under consistent use. Because of this, it’s also its main selling point.

The MSI GS65 has an 80WHr battery and it’s able to last 5-6 hours under normal usage. It is respectable. Most gaming laptops last somewhere between 3-4 hours.

Verdict – Pros and Cons

Both gaming laptops have a lot going on. And this makes it difficult to choose between them. Here are the pros and cons of each of them.

Gigabyte Aero 15x – Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Solid Build Quality Runs Hot and Loud

MSI GS65 – Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Great Performance Build Quality Could Be Better
Great Display Fingerprint Magnet
Beautiful Design Difficult To Upgrade

Thin And Light

It is still a difficult choice. But, let’s go a bit deeper.

  MSI GS65 Gigabyte Aero 15x
Build Quality No Yes
Design Yes No
Display Yes No
Thermals Yes No
Upgradeability No Yes
Performance Yes Yes
Battery Life No Yes
Total 4/7 4/7

Overall, it’s a tie. But, it all boils down to personal taste.

If you prefer the design of the MSI GS65 over the Gigabyte Aero 15x then answer is obvious.

If you want a gaming laptop with solid build quality with little to no creaks and flex. Then the Gigabyte Aero 15x is the right option.

If you find yourself upgrading the laptops more often than out. Then it will be best to steer clear from the MSI GS65 Stealth. Because of the way the motherboard has been flipped. The Gigabyte Aero 15x makes it easy to upgrade the internals.

To sum it all up, for the non-PC enthusiast. The MSI GS65 is the better option because it has better thermals and a nicer design than the Gigabyte Aero 15x. The MSI GS65 is perfect for those who rarely open up their laptops.

The Gigabyte Aero 15x is for PC enthusiast who knows what they are doing. You can solve the high temperatures by applying thermal paste and undervolting. Once this is done, then the Gigabyte Aero 15x becomes the better option. Because it will run at lower temperatures.

You can also do this to the MSI GS65. But, the Gigabyte Aero 15x will be better because of its battery life. Running at low temperatures and having amazing battery life is a WIN-WIN situation.
