Build Quality And Design

Build quality is important. It is what differentiates between the high-end gaming laptops to that of budget and mid-range.

Also, the better the build quality the more resistant the laptop is to bumps and falls. Nothing is more annoying for an expensive laptop to fall apart completely when it falls from a short height or bump into something.

Razer Blade 15

The build quality of the Razer Blade 15 is top-notch. So much that everyone knows this. The build quality and design are similar to that of the Apple MacBook Pro. An aluminium unibody that is solid and robust. There is minimum to no flex on the gaming laptop. Even around the keyboard and display lid. Everything is sturdy.

You can open the display lid with one hand. Thanks to its strong hinge. The Razer Blade 15 comes in two colours – Black and Mercury White. None of them has fancy lines or accents running through the design. A clean design that doesn’t scream gaming laptop.

The logo is found behind the lid which lights up when you turn the laptop on. But, you can choose to switch it off if it doesn’t fit your fancy. The logo is green for the all-black design and subtle white for the mercury-white design.

Because of its finish. This thing is a fingerprint and smudge magnet. You will find yourself cleaning it regularly. So having a cleaning cloth close by will be super helpful. When it comes to weight the Razer Blade 15 is one of the thinnest and lightest gaming laptops.

Only rivalled by a few. It weighs almost 4.7 pounds and almost half-an-inch thick. Overall, the Razer Blade 15 is a well-made and well-designed gaming laptop.

The Gigabyte Aero 15x also has great build quality. Similar to the of the Razer Blade 15. But, the design is entirely different. The Gigabyte Aero 15x exists in one colour only – all black.

It doesn’t exist in multiple colours. Just a black laptop with no fancy lines, accents or writings on it. A clean looking laptop. The only noticeable thing about the Gigabyte Aero is the logo on the lid. It lights up when the laptop is on.

Unfortunately, you can’t turn it off. When it comes to build quality, it is top-notch. An aluminium body which makes the Gigabyte Aero have a sturdy and solid build.

The Gigabyte Aero also has carbon fibre that covers part of the display lid. It comes out of the hinges and ends a few centimetres above. This gives it a sporty design. Kind of like a sports car with a carbon fibre hood. Not a bad design, to be honest.

The hinge mechanism itself is pretty strong. Strong enough to open with one hand. The Gigabyte Aero beats the Razer Blade 15 when it comes to thin and light. It weighs 4.6 pounds and almost half-an-inch thick. Compact and light. That’s the future of most gaming laptops now.

Both the Razer Blade 15 and Gigabyte Aero 15x have solid build quality. But, when it comes to design. The Razer Blade 15 just looks better.

Display

The Razer Blade 15 beats the Gigabyte Aero 15x when it comes to display. But, that’s for the Full HD (1920 x 1080). The Blade has better colour accuracy and gamut.

It’s high enough that you can use it for works that require such accuracy.

The Gigabyte Aero 15x has above-average colour accuracy and gamut. High enough to be used for works demanding colour accuracy. Although, the Razer Blade 15 will be the better option.

Side By Side

But, this doesn’t matter if you go with the 4K resolution displays. Because both will have high colour accuracy, gamut and brightness. Benefits that always accompany 4K displays.

Since both are gaming laptops. They have fast screens. A 144Hz refresh rate to reduce motion blur, screen tearing, stuttering and ghosting. Visual distortions that negatively impact smooth gameplay.

Both displays do not have GSYNC which is a good and a bad thing. A good thing because your Razer Blade 15 or Gigabyte Aero will have better battery life. A bad thing because you will miss out on far smoother gameplay.

But, it is not a big deal. Since the display is already fast enough and having better battery life is all that matters.

For brightness, both are bright enough to be used indoors and outdoors.

Overall, the Razer Blade 15 has a better display because of its higher colour accuracy and gamut. But, if you go with the 4K option which has a refresh rate of 60Hz. Then they pretty much become equal.

Thermals

Does it run hot? That’s what everyone is concerned about nowadays. High temperatures on a gaming laptop. Unfortunately, most thin and light gaming laptops suffer from high temperatures. The question is which one is cooler amongst the high temperatures

For one, the Gigabyte Aero is a hot mess. This is due to its thermal solution. Two large fans and two heat pipes that covers the CPU and GPU. It then becomes clear why the Gigabyte Aero 15x is a hot mess.

Most gaming laptops have several heats pipes. And some gaming laptops even have three cooling fans. Moreover, the Gigabyte Aero 15x doesn’t have vents at the side. But, only at the back and bottom. This also contributes to high temperatures.

Gigabyte Aero 15x Teardown

One way around it is by undervolting and applying thermal paste. This will reduce the temperatures from the 90-95 degree Celsius to somewhere between 75-85 degree Celsius. You can also control the fan settings to maximum speed for better cooling.

The Razer Blade 15 has a different cooling solution than the Gigabyte Aero 15x and other gaming laptops. Instead of heat pipes, the Razer Blade has what we call a copper vapour chamber.

It works similar to that of a car’s cooling system. Water is carried in the chamber and absorbs the heat in the system. It is then transformed into steam. The fans reduce the temperature by blowing away the heat in water vapour.

razer blade 15 teardown
Razer Blade 15 Teardown

This then turns the vapour back to water and the process is repeated. Unfortunately, you think this might work but it still runs at high temperatures. So you run the risk of thermal throttling like the Gigabyte Aero 15x.

But, it still runs cooler than the Aero 15x. If the Razer Blade 15 had more vents. Then it would have run a lot cooler. Undervolting and applying thermal paste will at least bring it to appreciable temperatures under heavy loads.

In short, the Gigabyte Aero 15x is a hot mess while the Razer Blade 15 is less of a hot mess.

Upgradeability

Both are easy to upgrade. All you have to do is remove a few screws on the back. And you have access to the internals. From there you can upgrade the RAM, SSD, and Wi-Fi card. The rest of the components are either soldered onto the motherboard or non-upgradeable.

Upgrading them is not a big deal.

Performance

Both are BEASTS. They all have a 9th Gen Intel Core hexa-core i7, 16GB RAM and an NVIDIA GTX or RTX graphics card.

Both laptops will be able to handle AAA title games on high settings. Both have NVMe SSD drives. That means you get crazy fast loading times, copying of files and loading of applications.

Razer Blade 15 Review

You can use both laptops for gaming and as a workstation laptop. You can use them for content creation.

Choosing the Razer Blade 15 or Gigabyte Aero 15x with the RTX graphics card will give you Ray-tracing. This will make graphics look more realistic at the expense of reduced FPS. Disabling it will push FPS back to high levels.

Gigabyte Aero 15x Review

The GTX cards are also good enough to play AAA title games on high settings. Moreover, the GTX 1660 Ti provides a lot of value. It is only 3-5 per cent slower than the RTX 2060. But, if you want something futureproof. Then it is best to go with the RTX cards.

To sum it all up, you will get crazy fast performance on gaming laptops.

Battery Life

The Gigabyte Aero 15x has the best battery life out of all the gaming laptops. A 94WHr battery is a big battery and that’s what the Gigabyte Aero 15x has. Because of this, it can last 7 hours under consistent use. Keep in mind for gaming, it is much shorter.

The Razer Blade 15, on the other hand, has an 80WHr battery. This gives it about 6 hours of battery life which is still impressive.

Gigabyte Aero 15x Vs Razer Blade – Verdict

By now, it should be clear which one is the better option. The Razer blade 15 beats the Gigabyte Aero 15x in several areas. Except for the battery life which it reigns as king when it comes to gaming laptops.

Overall, the Razer Blade 15 is the better option. And they are similar in price.
