Apple MacBook Pro

New Apple MacBook Pro (13-inch, 8GB RAM, 128GB Storage) - Space Gray

The Apple MacBook Pro is one of the best laptops with an i5 processor and 8GB RAM. The i5 processor is a high-performance, not the ultra-low-power processor found in most laptops. So already the performance is above average.

The build quality is top-notch. An aluminium unibody with a silver finish. To be honest, Apple MacBooks are beautiful laptops. The finish is smooth and even. A solid piece of machine. Another thing.

You might think because it’s made from aluminium it’s heavy – wrong. This laptop is very light coming in at 2.9 pounds. Just a little over a kilo. This makes it the perfect travel companion.

The display is rich and beautiful. A high-resolution display with great colour accuracy, reproduction and viewing angles. A 13-inch Retina display with a resolution of 2560 by 1600. It’s also bright enough to be used outdoors.

Another reason, aside from the weight, that makes the MacBook Pro a great travel companion is the battery life. The battery life is above average. That means you are looking at 8-9 hours under consistent use.

The Apple MacBook Pro is a great laptop overall. But it still has some downsides. First of all, it doesn’t have a great keyboard. It’s too shallow and the tactile feedback is not that great. Fortunately, Apple has put a program together for replacing keyboards.

Secondly, it doesn’t have normal USB ports – only Thunderbolt 3 ports. So you need to purchase a dock. Finally, it’s expensive for its specs. At least Apple’s great customer support justifies the price.

If you are looking for something that will last a long time i.e.solid build quality and great performance. Apple MacBook Pro is a great choice. If you think it’s not for you. The Huawei MateBook X Pro is a great alternative.

Pros

Great Performance

Beautiful Display

LG Gram

LG Electronics gram Thin and Light Laptop - 13.3' Full HD IPS Touchscreen Display, Intel Core i7 (8th Gen), 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Back-lit kbd - Dark Silver - 13Z980-A.AAS7U1

The LG Gram is a laptop with 8GB RAM and an i7 processor. So the performance on this laptop is great. But, that’s not where it shines. Its greatest strength is its battery life.

You could say the LG Gram is the King of Battery Life when it comes to ultrabooks. This thing last on average 10-11 hours under consistent use. That’s close to half a day. And you could squeeze more if you turn on battery saver and airplane mode.

When it comes to performance. As mentioned before, it is packed with an 8th Gen Intel Core i7 processor. A quad-core processor which is less than 10 per cent slower than the previous i7 high-performance processor.

The storage is a 256GB SSD. File transfers, boot-up speeds and loading of applications will be fast. Moreover, you can easily upgrade the RAM and SSD if you want better performance. And a longer usage time.

You will be surprised to know that the LG Gram weighs 2.4 pounds or a little over a kilo. This makes it one of the lightest ultrabooks on the market. Plus, it is almost half-an-inch in thickness. It’s so light and thin you might easily forget it’s there.

The display is a 13.3 inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) which is bright and vivid. The colour accuracy and gamut is above average. It is high enough that you can use for work that requires high colour accuracy.

The touchscreen though still leaves a lot to be desired. And there is a flex on the display lid. This causes the display to wobble a bit when using the touchscreen.

Light, thin, great performance and long battery life are the benefits that come with the LG Gram. One of the best 8GB RAM laptops you can get.

Pros

Long Battery Life

Acer Aspire 5

Acer Aspire 5 Slim Laptop, 15.6' Full HD IPS Display, 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8265U, 8GB DDR4, 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD, Backlit Keyboard, Fingerprint Reader, Windows 10 Home, A515-54-51DJ

The Acer Aspire 5 is one of the best 8GB laptops for under 600. Laptops in its price range rarely have its kind of hardware. They are mostly Intel Core i3s and AMD Ryzen 3s. But, the Acer Aspire 5 comes with an 8th Gen Intel Core i5 and a 256GB SSD.

When it comes to performance this budget laptop is very snappy. And the SSD makes this even more efficient. The laptop boots up in seconds, applications open and load quickly. The whole system is just responsive.

The i5 processor is only 3 per cent slower than the previous generation high-performance i7 found in gaming laptops. So you should understand that when it comes to performance. You won’t have a problem.

Enough about the performance. Let’s talk about the display. The Acer Aspire 5 is equipped with a Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS display. It is sharp and has great viewing angles. Colour accuracy and reproduction are also decent enough. The brightness leaves a lot to be desired though. Although it is bright enough to be used indoors. Outdoor use will be quite difficult.

For a budget laptop, the build quality is solid. It rigid and robust and so flex isn’t that much of a problem. The laptop has a silver finish making it easy to mistake it for a metallic laptop. Acer did a good job with the finish. The laptop is also light weighing in at 4.2 pounds and almost half-an-inch thick.

Battery life is so-and-so on the Acer Aspire 5. You get at most 6-7 hours under normal use. It could have been better. Its counterpart the Acer Aspire E15 which has a dedicated graphics card can last 8 hours.

Overall, the Acer Aspire 5 is one of the best budget laptops with 8GB RAM. And its processor further sweetens the deal. A solid laptop overall.

Pros

Solid Performance

Thin and Light

Solid Build Quality

Cons

ASUS VivoBook Thin and Light

ASUS VivoBook Thin and Lightweight FHD WideView Laptop, 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8250U, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 128GB SSD+1TB HDD, USB Type-C, NanoEdge, Fingerprint Reader, Windows 10 - F510UA-AH55

The ASUS VivoBook is another great laptop with 8GB RAM. An affordable laptop with solid performance.

The laptop is equipped with an 8th Intel Core i5 processor. The Intel processor is a low-power processor and 13 per cent slower than 7th Gen high-performance Intel Core i7 processor. So right off the bat, it is a capable processor. Multitasking and handling fairly heavy-duty tasks won’t be a problem.

Moreover, it has combined storage of a 128GB SSD and 1TB HDD. The OS is kept on the SSD for fast boot-up speeds. But, applications won’t benefit from the speed. Because there won’t be enough space left on it. At least you will have more than enough storage to store your files.

The display is amazing. A bright 15.6 inch Full HD (1920 x 1080). One of the few affordable laptops to have a decent display. Colour accuracy, reproduction and viewing angles overall are decent. A pleasant and vivid display.

The ASUS VivoBook is made from plastic. It is not as rigid as the Acer Aspire 5 and so has a bit of flimsiness to it. At least, it’s light in weight almost 3.7 pounds or 1.7 kg and thin. Battery life is also decent. It’s about 7-8 hours under normal usage.

Overall, the ASUS VivoBook Thin and Light is an affordable laptop with 8GB RAM and solid processing power. This makes it a great choice for college students or people who are on a budget.

Lenovo IdeaPad L340

2019 Lenovo Ideapad L340 Gaming Laptop, 15.6' FHD IPS Display, 9th Gen Intel 4-Core i5-9300H Upto 4.1GHz, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 4GB, Backlit Keyboard, USB-C, HDMI, Windows 10

The Lenovo Ideapad L340 is a mid-range gaming laptop without the “gamer” looks. This BEAST of a laptop looks like every normal laptop. But, with a twist i.e. the powerful hardware. Plus, it is also a light weighing approximately 4.8 pounds or 2.2 kg.

This laptop has a 9th Gen Intel Core i5 processor and a 512GB NVMe SSD. The Intel Core i5 is a quad-core high-performance processor. And so it will be able to handle heavy-duty tasks and multitasking easily.

Plus, with the help of the SSD NVMe storage, you get an efficient system. Fast-boot up speeds, launching and loading of application and games. In short, a super responsive laptop.

The graphics card – GTX 1650 – is a mid-range graphics card that can play the latest AAA title games on med to high settings. You will be able to max out graphic settings on Fortnite, Overwatch and PUBG.

The display, on the other hand, leaves a lot to be desired. It’s a 15.6 inch Full HD (1920 x 1080). The colour accuracy and reproduction on it is below average. And so colours are going to look washed out. It’s also not bright and outdoor use will be difficult.

Battery life, like all gaming laptops, is below average. You are looking at 4-5 hours under consistent use. It is respectable for a gaming laptop since most last 2-3 hours. The only good thing is its fast charging capabilities. It can get to 80 per cent in an hour. But, if you want a long battery life. Then better skip this.

Overall, the Lenovo Ideapad L340 is a powerful mid-range gaming laptop. It will handle your processing needs and more. And the design isn’t obnoxious like other gaming laptops.

MSI GF63

MSI GF63 Thin 8SC-030 15.6' Gaming Laptop, Thin Bezel, Intel Core i5-8300H, NVIDIA GeForce GTX1650, 8GB, 256GB NVMe NVMe SSD

The MSI GF63 is a well-rounded gaming laptop. But, it has a red design which might put you off. Though it’s only the keyboard and logo that’s red. It has no red accents or lines running through it. So the design is kind of almost clean.

This gaming laptop is powered by an 8th Gen High-performance Intel Core i5. It is almost on par with the 9th Gen Intel Core i5. But, has slightly lower clock speeds. You are looking at somewhere between 2 to 3 per cent. In short, you have a capable processor that can handle heavy loads and multitasking.

The storage is a 256 GB NVMe SSD. So the laptop is going to responsive and fast right off the bat. The graphics card is a GTX 1650 Max-Q. Compared to regular GTX 1650 laptop graphics card it’s slower.

You won’t get the same performance as the GTX 1650 card. But, it will still be able to push decent FPS on a lot of games. Plus, your laptop runs cooler and quieter. You won’t run the risk of thermal throttling.

The display is a 15.6 inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS. The colour accuracy and reproduction is similar to that of the Lenovo Ideapad L340. It’s also not that bright. The display leaves a lot to be desired.

Build quality is above average. A mix of plastic and brushed aluminium. The display lid is brushed aluminium and the bottom is plastic. Flex is almost non-existent here. Moreover, the laptop is light. It weighs a little over 4 pounds or 1.86 kg. You can easily carry this around with you without breaking your back.

The battery life as usual when it comes to gaming laptops is not impressive. Expect 3-4 hours under consistent.

Overall, the MSI GF63 is a solid laptop with a lot of processing power. Along with the Lenovo Ideapad L340, it is one of the best gaming laptops with 8GB RAM.

MSI GF63 Review

Is 8GB RAM Enough For A Laptop?

Currently, yes. A few years back 4GB RAM was enough for a laptop. And having 8GB RAM during that time was like having 16GB RAM or 32GB RAM currently.

But, as time goes on more applications and games will require more RAM and system resources to run well. What is important is if the laptop allows you to upgrade the RAM.

Some laptops have the RAM soldered onto the motherboard making it near impossible to do so. Being able to upgrade the RAM increases the lifespan of the laptop. Since you will be able to get more use out of it.

What To Do When It Is Time To Upgrade The RAM

OK, so you plan to upgrade your laptop RAM. How do you so? Fortunately, we have a guide that teaches you how to do so.

What To Look For In Choosing A Laptop

There are a lot of things to look out for when choosing a laptop. But, we will focus on the most important one. For an in-depth guide on how to find the best laptop. You can check out this guide.

CPU/Processor

The CPU is the brain of the computer. And you need a capable brain. Although it depends on your needs. If you want a computer for watching movies or listening to music.

It doesn’t make sense to go for an eight-core Intel i7 processor. An Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 will do just fine. So work out your need and see if you will be used for heavy loads, gaming or light work.

Graphics Card

No need to go for a dedicated graphics card if you are not going to game or handle professional work (CAD, video editing, etc.). An integrated card will do just fine for everyday use. Plus, laptops with dedicated cards are more expensive than those without on average.

RAM

We have already talked about RAM. Currently, 8GB RAM is sufficient for most tasks.

Display

The display is kind of tricky. Because most displays out there are different. The only time when you must seriously consider the display is if for games and work that require high colour accuracy. Aside from that, you will get by just fine. Just that the brightness might be a problem.

Final Thoughts

That’s it for the best 8GB RAM laptops. These provide the best value and bang for buck.
