6 Best Laptops For Sketchup (Top Picks For Professionals and Students + Guide)

In this article, we are going to discuss the best-recommended laptops for SketchUp. To be honest, desktops are the best for these kinds of tasks because give much better performance than laptops.

Laptops are not great because they take quite some time in rendering. Also, rendering maxes out the performance of the laptop which causes high temperatures resulting in thermal throttling.

Desktops have great cooling systems and so there is no thermal throttling. Thermal throttling can cause the laptop’s performance to drop resulting in longer rendering times.

In addition, maxing out the laptop’s performance all the time can reduce the lifespan of your laptop. This makes desktops superior to laptops in 3D modelling and rendering.

The great thing about laptops is that you can model and render on the go something desktops are not capable of.

Or if you prefer, you can model on your laptop and render on your desktop.

Now that we have made things clear, let’s get down to the best laptops for Sketchup.

MSI WS65

MSI WS65 8TK-888 (i7-8850H, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD, NVIDIA Quadro RTX 3000 6GB, 15.6' Full HD, Windows 10 Pro) VR Ready Workstation Laptop

The MSI WS65 is the best laptop for Sketchup. A solid choice for professionals or users who create and render large models or files. This workstation laptop has powerful hardware that makes it the go-to laptop for professional design.

Powered by a high-performance 8th Gen Intel Core i7, 32GB RAM and an NVIDIA RTX 3000. It is easy to see why this workstation is meant for large data files. The Intel Core i7 has a high clock count and it is even able to achieve high clock speeds thanks to Intel’s TurboBoost.

The 32GB RAM also ensures you have enough memory to open large data files and multitask. Finally, the RTX 3000 is a powerful high-end graphics optimised for professional applications. It is also powerful enough to handle AAA title games on high settings.

The MSI WS65 is a beautiful workstation. An all-black design with gold accents and matte finish. Unfortunately, it is a fingerprint magnet. MSI has also changed the logo. It is no more a dragon but three straight parallel lines that look like M.

One great thing about the MSI WS65 is its weight. This is one of the lightest workstations you can get your hands on. Up to now, workstations were known to be heavy. But things are changing. It weighs a little over 4 pounds (1.9 kg) and almost half-an-inch thick. Light and slim to easily carry around.

For the display. You have a 15.6 inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) display. Colour accuracy and reproduction are above average. A beautiful display that has thin bezels.

A powerful laptop like this is always going to have below-average battery life. The MSI can last 2-3 hours under consistent use.

Another thing. The fans get loud under heavy loads. This is to be expected for the laptop to remain cool. Slim and lightweight laptops have trouble staying cool. So the fans have to work extra hard.

The MSI WS65 is the best workstation laptop for Sketchup. But, only if you work with large models or are a professional. It has everything you need for rendering whiles being lightweight.

Pros

Top-notch Performance With Plenty Of RAM

Slim and Lightweight

Beautiful Design

Runs Cool

Cons

Fingerprint Magnet

Loud Fans Under Heavy Loads

Not The Best Battery Life

MSI WS75 (17 inch Version of MSI WS65) Review

Dell Precision 5530

Dell Precision M5530 Laptop, 15.6 inch FHD (1920x1080) Non-Touch, Intel Core 8th Gen i7-8850H, 32GB RAM, 512GB SSD, NVIDIA Quadro P1000, Windows 10 Pro (Renewed)

Another great laptop for medium and large models in Sketchup – The Dell Precision 5530. This workstation has identical looks to the Dell XPS 15.

If you are not careful you might even mistake it for it. It has the same build quality and design. The only difference is the insides. The Dell Precision 5530 has professional certified hardware whilst the Dell XPS 15 does not.

A high-performance 8th Gen Intel Core i7, 32GB RAM and an NVIDIA Quadro P1000. Enough firepower to tear through rendering and Sketchup. Also, plenty of RAM to run demanding applications and multitask in the background.

The best part? It is future-proof. Because the processor itself is a six-core CPU with high clock speeds. Combine that with 32GB RAM and you pretty much won’t need to get a new laptop for a long time.

One great thing about the Dell Precision. It is one of the few workstations to have above-average battery life. To be honest, this is impressive.

Because workstations have powerful hardware which eats a lot of battery power. It can last 8-9 hours under consistent use. Don’t expect the same amount of hours under heavy usage.

It is also lighter and thinner than the MSI WS65. It weighs almost 4 pounds (1.8 kg) and almost half-an-inch thick.

The display is a 15.6 inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) with thin bezels. A colour accurate and bright display.

Overall, the Dell Precision 5530 deserves the spot of being one of the best laptops for Sketchup. The hardware is proof enough that it will be able to handle professional drawing.

Pros

Excellent Performance

Thin And Lightweight

Great Build Quality and Good Battery Life

Solid Keyboard

Cons

ASUS VivoBook K571

Asus Vivobook K571 Laptop, 15.6' FHD, Intel Core i7-9750H CPU, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650, 16GB RAM, 256GB PCIe Nvme SSD + 1TB HDD, Windows 10 Home, K571GT-EB76, Star Black

The ASUS VivoBook K571 is a solid laptop for Sketchup students. A lightweight laptop (4.7 pounds) with great hardware. It can handle medium-sized models and files. You can also do a bit of rendering on it.

Talking about powerful hardware. It is powered by a high-performance 9th Gen Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM and a GTX 1650. As mentioned before, the Intel Core i7 can achieve high clock speeds when the situation called for it. Plus, it has more than enough memory for multitasking.

The GTX 1650, on the other hand, is a capable graphics card. If you like to play games. You will be glad to know that it can handle AAA title games on medium settings.

When it comes to the display. You have a 120Hz 15.6 inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) display. For gamers, have a 120Hz display means the less chance of visual distortions (screen tearing, stuttering and ghosting) happening. This results in smoother gameplay. The screen is also bright and has decent viewing angles.

This laptop doesn’t have the best battery life though. It is below the average 8-hour mark. You can use it continuously for 4-5 hours before requiring a recharge.

High clock speed, plenty of RAM and lightweight. The ASUS VIvoBook K571 is one of the best laptops for Sketchup. If you are a student or someone who works on medium-sized models. A solid Sketchup laptop.

Pros

Great Performance

Lightweight

Decent Display

Cons

Not The Best Battery Life

Lenovo IdeaPad L340

Lenovo IdeaPad L340 Gaming Laptop, 15.6-Inch FHD (1920 X 1080) IPS Display, Intel Core i7-9750H Processor, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB HDD, 256GB NVMe SSD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050, Windows 10, 81LK000EUS, Black

The Lenovo IdeaPad L340 is a great laptop for rendering medium models in Sketchup. A normal-looking laptop that has gaming hardware.

The display is a 15.6 inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS. It is not the best display out there. Colour accuracy and reproduction are below average. So colours look washed out. Plus, it is not a bright display. Viewing angles are not so great either.

The Lenovo IdeaPad is a beautiful looking laptop though. An all-black laptop with a touch of blue. The keyboard and logo have blue accents. And the build quality isn’t bad. It’s made from hard plastic with a little bit of flex. When it comes to weight, it is approximately 4.8 pounds or 2.2 kg.

When it comes to battery life. It’s able to last 4-5 hours on a single charge. Not so impressive. But the best part is the fast charging capabilities it has. You can charge it to up to 80 per cent in an hour. That leaves you with more battery power.

When it comes to performance. The Lenovo IdeaPad L340 has a high-performance 9th Gen Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM and a GTX 1050. For a budget gaming laptop, those are some impressive hardware. A processor with high clock speed. Plus, it has the recommended amount of RAM for Sketchup.

The RAM slot is a single channel so unfortunately, you can’t take advantage of dual-channel memory. And you can only upgrade it up to 16GB RAM.

Overall, the Lenovo IdeaPad L340 might not be the best laptop. But, it is certainly one of the best laptops for Sketchup. Thanks to its high-performance processor and dedicated graphics card.

Acer Aspire E15 Review

What To Look For When Buying A Laptop For SketchUp, 3D Modelling And Rendering

CPU

The more cores a processor has the less time it will take to render. In rendering, the laptop is pushed to its maximum performance and having a lot of cores and high clock speeds in a processor help immensely.

Because the high number of cores will work together to finish the modelling and rendering quickly.

Sketchup is more CPU-based than GPU. You need a powerful or high-performance processor with high clock speeds. Preferably, 2 GHz + processor.

Graphics Card

Graphics cards are not as important as CPU when it comes to Sketchup and rendering but they are still a great deal of help. You will be fine with integrated graphics cards on small models.

Dedicated graphics cards become important when you rendering large models and data. For this reason, workstations with NVIDIA Quadro cards are the best because they have been optimised for said tasks.

GTX cards are great. But, only for smaller models.

RAM

8 GB of RAM or more is recommended. Sketchup and rendering take large amounts of RAM when they are running. An insufficient amount of RAM will result in freezing or lagging of your laptop. It will also take a much longer time to complete the rendering.

Budget

Budget is the most important because it determines whether you will be able to get the best or the worst.

You also have to consider whether the tasks you are going to subject the laptop are demanding. A planned budget helps in choosing the best laptop according to your needs at that price.

Stick to these and you will find the best laptop for you.

Final Thoughts

That’s the end of our recommended list of the best laptops for Sketchup, 3D modelling and rendering. Feel free to comment if you need any help in finding a laptop.
