ASUS UX550GE-XB71T Zenbook Pro 15.6' UHD 4K Touch Laptop, Intel Core i7-8750HK, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Win10 Pro, GTX1050Ti

The ASUS Zenbook Pro is not for the weak hearted. This laptop is meant for those who want to take professionalism to the next level.

The ASUS ZenBook Pro is a high-end laptop for heavy workloads.

What makes the ASUS ZenBook Pro suitable for heavy workloads is its 8th Generation i7 processor. And not just any i7. An unlocked six-core high-performance i7 processor.

Unlocked in the sense you can overclock it for faster core speeds. This leads to more performance gains but also more heat.

Along with its i7 processor, it has 16GB of RAM and a 512GB PCIe NVME SSD. The perfect recipe for a powerful system.

The graphics card is a dedicated GTX 1050 Ti. Even though there are more capable cards. It is still decent enough for 2D and to some extent 3D game development and design.

Gaming shouldn’t be an issue if you crank down the graphics settings. What you should be worried about is the heat during an intense gaming session.

The display is superb. A 15.6-inch glossy 4K display. The colour accuracy and reproduction on this display is one of the best out there.

It even has better colour accuracy and reproduction than the MacBook Pro.

Combine that with a high-resolution display and you have a great display. In addition to that, ASUS decided to add a second screen which can be found on the touchpad.

Even with its awesome hardware, the ASUS ZenBook Pro falls short in some places. The first is the webcam. A low-resolution webcam that makes it almost unusable to be used for video calls or taking pictures.

The second shortcoming is the fact that it is a fingerprint magnet. It has a smooth finish that easily attracts fingerprints.

Lastly, the battery life. To be honest, you won’t get a long battery life when you have a power-hungry powerful processor and a 4K display. It averages 4-5 hours under consistent usage.

Fortunately, it has a fast charge feature which can charge it to 60 per cent in under 50 minutes.

The ASUS ZenBook Pro is a powerhouse that can handle professional and heavy workloads.

Doesn’t matter if it is game development, game design or programming. This laptop will be more than enough.

Dell XPS 15

Dell XPS 15 9570-8th Generation Intel Core i7-8750H Processor, 4k Touchscreen display, 16GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM, 512GB SSD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti, Windows 10 Home (Renewed)

The Dell XPS 15 is another great laptop for game development and design. In addition to that, Dell XPS laptops are friendly to Linux operating systems making them great for programming.

The specs of the Dell XPS 15 is similar to that of the ASUS ZenBook Pro with a few differences. The processor is an 8th Gen six-core i7 but it’s not unlocked. So you can’t overclock to gain a performance boost.

Still even without overclocking it is a powerful processor. Just 7 per cent slower than the 9th Gen Intel i7.

In addition to that, you have 16GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD. Specs like these are more than enough to handle your game development and design needs.

The graphics card is a GTX 1050 Ti which is still a capable card. You will get enough use out of it when developing your games.

You can run AAA title games smoothly on low to medium settings. Work hard, play hard, Right?

Best Laptops For Data Science

The display on this laptop is a bright and colour accurate one. A colour accurate display is always a plus in game design. A 15.6 inch Full HD (1920 x0 1080) which is able to put out 400 nits.

The display doesn’t disappoint at all. Because of this, the greatness of the display oozes in the battery department. It is able to last a whopping 10-11 hours of consistent use. Not too shabby.

This Dell XPS 15 would have been a perfect laptop if not for its awkwardly placed camera.

The camera which is placed below the Dell logo looks straight up into your nose. Best to avoid if you like to skype or video call a lot.

Overall, the Dell XPS 15 and is affinity to Linux makes it one of the best laptops for not only game development and design but for programming too.

Gigabyte Aero 15x

Gigabyte AERO 15 Classic-SA-F74ADW 15' Thin Bezel LG 144Hz FHD IPS LCD, i7-9750H, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, Samsung 16GB RAM, M.2 PCIe 512GB Intel 760P SSD, Win10 Home, 94Wh Ultra Slim Gaming Laptop

The Gigabyte Aero 15x is for you who likes to play AAA title games and develop games at the same time. But first things first. The bloatware on this laptop is insane.

Too much bloatware tends to fill your machine with crap and slow it down. You can follow this guide to get rid of bloatware or reinstall a clean version of windows.

Once that is that you will possibly have the best laptops in your hands for gaming, game development and design.

Best Laptops For Programming

The gaming laptop is powered by a 9th Gen Intel i7 processor. A powerful six-core processor which is 7 per cent faster than the previous generation.

The 7 per cent performance boost is small. But it will definitely benefit those who need that extra performance.

The graphics card is an NVIDIA GTX 1660 Ti which is close in performance to that of the GTX 1070. You can expect high fps on AAA title games and also better graphics performance in designing and developing 3D games.

The display on this thing is a 15.6 inch 144Hz FHD (1920 x 1080). The display is not bright but the colour accuracy and reproduction is above average.

For gaming, the 144Hz display eliminates screen tearing and ghosting. This results in a smooth gaming experience.

Most gaming laptops have awful battery lives but not the Gigabyte Aero. This gaming laptop is able to last a respectable 7 hours under consistent use. All this made possible because of its 94WHr battery.

Aside from its poor webcam position that looks into your nose and the tendency for the fans to get load under heavy loads.

The Gigabyte Aero 15x is a solid option if you like to develop, design and play games.

Razer Blade 15 Review

Microsoft Surface Book 2

Microsoft Surface Book 2 15' (Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 256 GB)

The Microsoft Surface Book 2 is a true convertible laptop. You are able to attach and re-attach the display to the keyboard.

This allows you to use the laptop in tablet mode by disconnecting the keyboard or use it as a laptop by re-attaching it to the keyboard.

Even though it’s a great thing the 15-inch display makes it quite uncomfortable to use in tablet mode. Imagine using a laptop with a 15.6-inch display as a tablet.

It feels bulky. Luckily, there is an option for a 13.5-inch display. Talking about the display, the Microsoft Surface Book 2 has a high resolution almost close to that of 4K.

The colour accuracy and reproduction on this thing is also high making colours pop and reds look like reds.

The performance on this convertible laptop is noteworthy. An 8th Gen quad-core i7 processor. The low power type.

It wouldn’t make sense to put a high-performance processor in a laptop such as the Microsoft Surface Book 2 because of its form factor.

It will thermal throttle like crazy. The low power processor is still powerful enough for a lot of heavy duty tasks.

For the graphics card, it comes with a GTX 1060. A powerful card that can handle 3D game development and design. It can also handle AAA title gaming quite well.

The Microsoft Surface Book 2 is quite pricey and what is disappointing is the fact that its USB Type-C doesn’t support Thunderbolt 3. Also, you have to purchase the Surface Pen separately.

But, the battery life of the Microsoft Surface Book 2 is very impressive. With the keyboard connected you are able to get more than 12 hours of battery life under consistent use.

Disconnect the keyboard and it comes to 10-12 hours of battery life. This easily makes it the best laptop with the longest battery life out there. This is made possible because the keyboard also has a battery in it.

The Microsoft Surface Book 2 is a versatile convertible laptop. Along with its awesome battery life, great performance and display.

It easily becomes one of the best laptops for game development and design.

Dell G3

Dell G3 Gaming Laptop - 15.6' FHD, 8th Gen Intel i5-8300H CPU, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, NVIDIA GTX 1050 4GB VRAM, Black - G3579-5965BLK-PUS

If you are a game design student or just a game developer looking for a budget laptop. The Dell G3 is a solid option. It has its flaws but it will definitely get the job done.

Talking about flaws let’s jump into them.

The Dell G3’s 15.6-inch display is not impressive. It is a Full HD (1920 x 1080) with below average colour accuracy and reproduction. The brightness on the display is also low giving it a dull look.

If you are really concerned about the display then you should skip this laptop. Keep in mind that it is a budget laptop though.

The next thing is its touchpad. It’s shallow and feels rough. The keyboard though is decent. Tactile feedback and key travel are decent enough to make typing a pleasant experience.

Let’s move onto what the Dell G3 gets right.

The first is the performance which is pretty solid. A high-performance 8th Gen Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD.

The perfect combination of creating a fast and responsive system.

The graphics card on this thing is a GTX 1050. A budget gaming card powerful enough to handle most AAA title games on low settings.

And decent enough for 3D game development.

Battery life is also impressive for a gaming laptop. You are able to get 6-7 hours of battery life under consistent use. Most gaming laptops only last 3-4 hours on average.

The Dell G3 is a bang for buck gaming laptop. It doesn’t wow like the higher-end models. But it can definitely get the job done. A solid option for those on a tight budget.

What To Look For When Getting A Laptop For Game Development And Design

Game development and game design can be demanding depending on the project. Demanding projects need all the firepower you can get.

Just like AAA title games also need powerful hardware to run smoothly. Here are some few things to look out in choosing a laptop for game development or game design.

CPU

Get the most powerful CPU within your budget. For Intel, you are looking at the i5s, i7s and i9s of the latest generations.

Also, make sure the laptop has a good cooling system or else it will thermal throttle like crazy. When that happens you won’t be able to make good use of the processor.

For AMD, Ryzen 5s and 7s. They offer comparable performance to that of Intel i5s and i9s.

You can check out this guide to know the difference between high-performance Intel processors and low-performance ones.

There is also a guide for how to differentiate between the various AMD Ryzens.

RAM

Recommended RAM is 16GB. Currently, 8GB is just not enough you will get more mileage and performance gains if you have 16GB of RAM. In case you ever get a laptop that has 8GB RAM make sure to upgrade it to 16GB.

Graphics

Always go for the best graphics card your budget can cover. Also, consider if what you will be doing will be 2D or 3D game development or design.

NVIDIA GTX 1050 and up are recommended. Keep in mind that if you are developing a demanding game you should have a graphics card that can keep up with it.

Display

Colour accurate displays with high colour reproduction are recommended. Especially if you are into game design. You need your colours to look like colours.

In addition to that, anti-glare displays should be a must since you will be staring at the display all day.

Also, consider laptops that allow you to hook up to external displays. This will make work so much better and boost productivity.

Final Thoughts

Without game development and game design we wouldn’t have games. That’s it for the list and buyer’s guide of best laptops for game development and game design. Feel free to drop a comment.
