What’s The Best Laptop for Accounting and Finance?

There are four major things you need to look at in selecting the best laptop: processor, display, RAM and keyboard.

Processor

The processor is important because it’s the brain of the computer. The more powerful the brain the smoother everything will go. Multitasking will be easier and the performance will be snappy.

For laptops that have Intel processors go for Intel Core i5 or higher. And if possible the latest generation or the previous generation before the latest. Hope that didn’t confuse you. You can check out this guide for better understanding of Intel’s naming convention.

For AMD processors Ryzen 5 or higher. The same rule also applies to their generation. For more information on understanding the letters and meanings behind AMD Ryzen names check out this guide.

Display

Displays should have a resolution of at least Full HD (1920 x 1080). They should also be matte displays since they help reduce glare. Glare causes a lot of eye fatigue and strain. You will be better off with a matte or anti-glare display.

RAM

A minimum of 8GB RAM is needed for smooth multitasking. Anything lower and you are shooting yourself in the foot. 8GB RAM is enough. You can open several spreadsheets without any problems.

Keyboard

Last is the keyboard. Since you will be typing number all the time having a great keyboard is a must. This will make things easier on your fingers and also provide a comfortable typing experience.

Can You Run Quickbooks On A Laptop?

Yes, you can run Quickbooks on a laptop. But, you have to get the version meant for laptops, not desktops.

Quickbooks Desktop on a laptop will constantly require you to export and import files constantly which is not feasible in the long run.

Should I get A Mac For Accounting, Finance and Quickbooks?

No, MacBooks are not compatible with a lot of software. Even if you get a MacBook you have to dual-boot your Mac in order to use Windows.

Also, as a student, not all accounting software is Mac friendly.

Save yourself a lot of headaches and go with a Windows laptop. After all, even if you get a Mac you will still install Windows on it. Are you willing to go through all that?

Here Is The List Of The Best Laptops For Accountants, Accounting Students And Finance

Best For Accounting, Finance Professionals And Quickbooks

Dell XPS 13

Dell XPS 13 - 13.3' UHD InfinityEdge, 8th Gen Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD - Silver - 9370

The Dell XPS 13 is a professional looking laptop that makes it perfect for the office. The design of the laptop screams “Business Only”.

This is one of the lightest and powerful laptops that you can get as an accountant or finance personnel.

First of all, the laptop is easy to carry. A 2.7-pound laptop and half an inch thick. This laptop makes it possible to carry anywhere with you.

Doesn’t matter if you are flying out of the country to conduct business or just going to the office. In addition to that, the battery life is impressive. You are able to get at least 8-9 hours under consistent usage.

You could get more battery life if this model had a 1080p display. The trade-off is its 4K (3840 x 2160) display touchscreen display with thin bezels.

4K displays always have the best colour accuracy, reproduction, saturation and vibrancy. Everything on the display looks sharp and crispy. And the brightness of this model is high.

When it comes to performance the Dell XPS 13 is powered by an 8th Gen Intel Core i7 and 16GB RAM. The Intel i7 is a powerful quad-core processor that will be able to handle large Microsoft Word and Excel files.

The 512GB PCIe SSD has fast read/write speeds for that fast boot up speeds and opening of applications. This hardware combination makes the Dell XPS 13 a powerful laptop.

The thing about the Dell XPS 13 is that it doesn’t come with USB-A ports (2.0, 3.0, etc). Instead, you have two Thunderbolt 3 ports and a USB-C port.

This means you have to resort to using a dock. The webcam is also located at a weird position where it looks up into your nose in use.

Nevertheless, the Dell XPS 13 is a beauty and a beast that can handle your accounting and finance needs. Easily one of the best laptops for accounting and Quickbooks.

Pros Cons
Beautiful Display Awkward Webcam Position
Easy To Carry No USB-A Ports

Best For Accounting and General Office Use

LG Gram

LG Gram Thin and Light Laptop - 15.6' Full HD IPS Display, Intel Core i7 (8th Gen), 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Back-lit Keyboard - Dark Silver - 15Z980-A.AAS7U1

The LG Gram is a solid laptop for accounting and general office use. It has the performance, numpad and battery life every accountant or accounting students needs.

The keyboard itself makes typing a comfortable experience. An important thing to look out for since a lot of numbers will be entered into spreadsheets.

In addition to that, it comes with a numpad. Numpads make entries faster but are not major deal breakers.

The LG Gram is powered by an 8th Gen Intel Core i7 processor and 8GB RAM. The Intel Core i5 processor is a powerful processor and has enough power to handle large word processing and spreadsheet documents.

The storage itself is a 256GB SSD. The laptop has two RAM slots. One of them is a soldered 4GB RAM. What this means is that only one slot can be upgraded. So putting a 16GB RAM stick will give you 20GB RAM.

The 15.6-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) display has great viewing angles and colour accuracy. A matte display that reduces glare.

The colours are also vibrant and have a certain pop to it. The display could have been perfect if the lid has little to no flex to it.

The battery life on this laptop is amazing. You are able to get 10-12 hours of battery life under consistent usage before requiring a recharge.

Also, this is one of the lightest 15.6-inch laptops on the market. It weighs roughly 2.4 pounds making it easy to forget that you are carrying a laptop.

The LG Gram has a comfortable keyboard, fast performance and ultra-lightweight. This easily makes it one of the best laptops for accounting, finance and general office use.

Pros Cons
Numpad Soldered RAM
Solid Performance Lid Has Flex
Easy To Carry
Long Battery Life

Best Value

ASUS VivoBook S Ultra

ASUS VivoBook S Ultra Thin and Portable Laptop, Intel Core i7-8550U Processor, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 128GB SSD+1TB HDD, 15.6' FHD WideView Display, ASUS NanoEdge Bezel, S510UA-DS71

The ASUS Vivobook is a mid-priced laptop that offers a lot of value. This machine comes with a lot of storage.

Combined storage of a 256GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. That’s more than enough storage for your spreadsheets and word documents.

What’s even cooler about the storage is that the operating system is kept on the 256GB SSD for fast boot-up speeds. Whilst the large files are kept on the HDD.

In addition to its massive storage space, the laptop is powered by an 8th Gen Intel Core i7 processor and has 8GB RAM. Laptops with i7 processors are powerful and are capable of running several applications at once.

And in some cases gaming for this particular type of processor. Talking about gaming, the graphics card is an entry-level NVIDIA MX150. A good enough card for light gaming.

The battery life of this laptop will somewhat give you mixed feels. It lasts somewhere between 6-8 hours under consistent use. Tweaking the settings will definitely give you more than 8 hours.

The display on the laptop is beautiful. A 15.6 inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) Infinity display. Colour accuracy and reproduction is decent for a mid-priced laptop.

The viewing angles are also great. And brightness is high enough to be used outdoors. All in all, the display produces sharp and crisp images.

The ASUS Vivobook has two flaws. The speakers and fan. The location of the speakers causes i.e under the laptop causes the volume to be low and a little bit muffled.

The fan also tends to kick up a lot when under heavy load. The noise might disturb but keep in mind that the fans are working in overdrive to help cool the laptop. A cool laptop is always able to perform at its maximum.

The ASUS Vivobook is a good laptop for not only Quickbooks but general accounting purposes. Most mid-range priced laptops do not offer as much value as the ASUS Vivobook.

Pros Cons
Good Screen And Brightness Not The Best Speakers
Good Build Quality Fan Makes A Lot Of Noise
Good Performance
Massive Amount Of Storage

Best Laptop For Accounting And Finance Students

MSi GS65 Stealth

MSI GS65 Stealth Ultra Thin Gaming Laptop (Intel i7-8750H, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 512GB SSD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 8GB, 15.6' Full HD 144Hz 7ms, Windows 10 Home) Gamer Notebook Computer

There is no denying that as a student you will definitely play games to reduce the stress of studying and lectures from time to time.

The problem is that most gaming laptops are either heavy, have bad battery life or both. The MSI GS65 is an exception to this.

The MSI GS65 Stealth is a slim and lightweight gaming laptop weighing. It weighs roughly 4 pounds and a little over half an inch thick. This makes it easy to carry around especially around campus or to classes.

Heck, you can easily take it to a fellow classmate’s room and have a friendly game competition.

As a gaming laptop, the performance is more than enough for Quickbooks or any other accounting software or spreadsheet. Powered by an 8th Gen Intel Core i7 hexacore processor and 16GB RAM.

You can open numerous Microsoft Word and Excel documents without any problems. The graphics card is a dedicated NVIDIA GTX 1070 Max-Q which can handle AAA title games on medium to high settings.

Thanks to its Max-Q card the battery life of the MSI GS65 Stealth is one of the best for a gaming laptop.

It is able to last 5-6 hours of consistent use before running out. That’s enough time to save your documents and also study before requiring a recharge.

The 15.6-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS display will make your head turn. The 144Hz refresh rate will prevent screen tearing and stuttering making games run smoothly.

The display is also sharp and has a high colour accuracy, brightness and reproduction. You won’t be disappointed with this display.

Even with all its goodies, the MSI GS65 Stealth has its flaws. The first is its build quality. The laptop has a lot of flex to it especially the keyboard area and lid that can make your heart skip a beat.

The other flaw is that it runs hot. A consequence of its thin chassis. Gaming laptops that have thin chassis are bad at cooling. Applying thermal paste or getting a cooling fan will help control high temperatures.

Every student wants a gaming laptop with good battery life. The MSI GS65 does just that. A powerful laptop with decent battery life for a gaming laptop.

The MSI GS65 is one of the best laptops you can get if you are an accounting or finance student.

The similar laptop that offers better gaming performance is the Acer Predator Triton 500. It is lightweight but with less battery life.

A cheaper alternative is the HP Omen. It comes with an RTX 2060 but has a 60Hz display.

Pros Cons
Great Performance Not The Best Build Quality
Thunderbolt 3 Port Runs Hot
Slim and Easy To Carry
Decent Battery Life For A Gaming Laptop
